On the night of June 29, 1931, a mob of 2,000 people, led by members of the most powerful National Socialist organization residing in Greece at the time, the EEE (which stood for National Union Greece but also has the same initials with the phrase Greeks eliminate Jews, a version often used by its members) attacked the offices of the Macabi Thessaloniki Gymnastics Association in the Campbell district of the city. The attack, during which two people were murdered, resulted in the arson of the district. Campbell was built to house Jewish families whose homes were destroyed in the great fire of Thessaloniki in 1917.
